Leela’s Top Picks: End Racism!

“Racism is such a stain on humanity!”

Yesterday’s Euro 2020 final once again showed the levels of racism that still exist in our world. Our Chair of the CCSJ, Leela Ramdeen, has been fighting racist attitudes and advocating for equality and peaceful societies for over 40 years!

As a lawyer who advises on human rights issues locally, regionally and globally, Leela has a wealth of information on social justice issues. For the month of July, we’re highlighting Leela’s experiences with regard to social justice and creating a more inclusive and harmonious society.

Leela is a global citizen who lived and worked in the United Kingdom (UK) for over 30 years.  As a teacher for primary school children in the UK, she remembers, fighting institutional racism by going “head to head” with the then school principal who would not allow the black students time to cream their skin after swimming lessons.  Leela, insisted on inclusivity and a deeper understanding of the needs of all children, especially children with different skin textures, not suited to the colder climates.

All these years later, Leela is still bringing critical awareness to the need to implement inclusive practices for all children within society.

Leela’s work with the most vulnerable critically extends to those within the society of Trinidad and Tobago.  As the Chair of the Archdiocese’s Ministry for Migrants and Refugees, Leela, is a powerful voice for those who do not have one!  Make sure to check out Leela’s weekly article in Trinidad and Tobago’s Guardian Newspapers.

They say, a picture says a thousand words, so we’ll just let the below picture do the talking for our beloved CCSJ/AMMR Chair!
