Advocate for yourself - know the signs of abuse.

One of our missions is to raise awareness on human rights. In doing so, we also have a duty to inform others on their personal rights so that they know what treatment they are entitled to, and can therefore lobby for that treatment effectively. Knowledge is power, as they say, and having the power to change society comes with realizing how important it is to enact change for yourself.

Today, CCSJ is asking you the question – do you know your rights?

Rights are aspects of freedom that you are entitled to. From the Catholic perspective, all human life is inherently worthy of freedom, dignity, respect and protection – from conception until natural death. However, it would be a grave mistake to assume that this ‘respect for life’ rings true in every situation. One’s life & rights can be disrupted or infringed upon in several different ways, whether through a subtle micro-aggression or a more concerning, flagrant disregard of the sanctity of the human person. It would be an even more grave mistake, then, to assume that these rights are recognised or cherished by the authorities meant to enact them – it is a sad world indeed when even our alleged protectors (law enforcement, government & the justice system) cannot be trusted to fight for us.

Certainly, though, it helps to know where the law stands, and where you are justified in fighting for your own wellfare and safeguarding your own autonomy.

Therefore, in an effort to spread awareness and to support victims of childhood abuse and domestic violence (two of the most disturbing and blatant infringements on human rights that often get little justice) – we are making some informative handbooks FREELY available!

Written by Shelly-Ann Simon, our designated social worker and case manager, these handbooks seek to inform you on the after effects of abuse and how it impacts the victim. Learn to spot abusive behaviour, its causes, and what to do if you or someone you know is suffering from abuse. These booklets also include emergency contacts.
