Party done! Covid-19 testing was available on Ash Wednesday with the Catholic Commission for Social Justice (CCSJ) and their partners, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Medical Research Foundation and Caribbean Med Labs Foundation.
The Catholic News caught up with the CCSJ and their partners in health and justice on Independence Square in front of the Cathedral as they offered free Covid testing to the general public.
Asked why the need for the health outreach, Community Outreach Coordinator of the CCSJ, Matthew Pierre stated, “We just had Carnival. We just had a big event with mingling of persons, and with all that interaction you can pick up the cold, influenza or Covid. And today, we’re focusing on Covid.”
According to the Ministry of Health’s epidemiologist, Dr Avery Hinds, post-Carnival trends did display a spike in Covid-19 cases, and fortunately, it did not overwhelm our national health system.
Nevertheless, there is a call for increased vigilance as we must continue to be “our neighbour’s keeper”, as those within our communities with underlying health conditions who are the most vulnerable.
The CCSJ and PAHO will continue their public health Covid-19 testing on the following dates:

Brian Lara Promenade – March 4, 2023
San Juan Promenade – March 11, 2023
City Gate, Port of Spain – March 18, 2023
