“Human dignity can only be realized and protected in the context of relationships with the wider society.”

“An integral ecology is inseparable from the notion of the common good, a central and unifyingprinciple of social ethics.”

“Society as a whole, and the state in particular, are obliged to defend and promote the common good.”

Community & The Common Good

St. Pope John XXIII defined the common in his 1961 encyclical, Mater en Magistra (On Christianity and Social Progress – Mother and Teacher), as “the sum total of social conditions which allow people either as groups or individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more easily.”

Building the common good also requires us to consider whether or not we are good stewards of God’s creation. We have much work to do to promote ecological justice, which is inextricably linked to integral human development.

Social justice can be obtained only in respecting the transcendent dignity of man.
We are who surrounds us.

Working to achieve the common good “requires the constant ability and effort to seek the good of others as though it were one’s own good.” Remember the golden rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
