“The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members”.

“Injustice is the perverse root of poverty. The cry of the poor daily becomes stronger but heard less.”

“Everyone has the right to possess a sufficient amount of the earth’s goods for themselves and their family.”

Poverty & Social Exclusion

On World Day of the Poor, Pope Francis urged us to hear the cry of the poor, who he says: “are a true presence of Jesus in our midst. ‘As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me’ (Matthew 25:40)”.  He reminds us to stand in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable.

We have a duty of care to work to ensure that people have basic amenities e.g. food, water, housing, sanitation, health care and employment. The first step in seeking to eradicate poverty is to recognise the inherent dignity of each human person made in God’s image and likeness.

No-one can remain insensitive to the inequalities that persist in the world.

We all belong.

Those who are socially excluded suffer from a combination of linked problems such as unemployment, poor skills, low incomes, poor housing, high crime environments, bad health and family breakdown.
